What is PRINCE2?

The project management method explained — what PRINCE2 is, how it’s structured, and how it’s used across New Zealand.

The short answer

PRINCE2 (PRojects IN Controlled Environments) is the world’s most widely used structured project management method — a proven framework for planning, controlling and delivering a project of any size. In New Zealand it’s a common requirement in government and enterprise project roles. Foundation is the entry-level certification; Practitioner proves you can apply the method.

Plenty of people run projects without a method — a spreadsheet here, a stand-up there, and a lot of hoping. PRINCE2 replaces the hoping with a repeatable structure that works whether you’re rolling out software in Auckland or a capital works programme for a council.

What does PRINCE2 actually give you?

At its heart, PRINCE2 answers the practical questions every project faces: who decides what, how we plan, how we handle risk and change, and how we know the project is still worth doing. It gives everyone a shared language and a clear set of steps — so a project isn’t held together by one person’s memory.

The structure: principles, practices and processes

PRINCE2 (7th edition) is built on three things you’ll learn at Foundation:

  • 7 principles — the non-negotiables, like continued business justification and learning from experience.
  • 7 practices — the areas you manage: business case, organising, plans, quality, risk, issues and progress.
  • 7 processes — the flow from starting up a project through to closing it.

The 7th edition also puts fresh weight on the people side of change and on sustainability — a nod to how modern NZ projects are actually judged.
